'What is the Word'

'What is the Word'

'Seeing Beckett' Exhibition
Liverpool John Moores, October 2014.
Visual response to the writings of Samuel Beckett. The work relates to Beckett's last poem, 'What Is The Word' (Comment Dire?), that explores the inability to find words to express oneself, a theme echoed in Beckett’s earlier work, and also the symptoms of aphasia that he experienced late in life”.

From fleeting images of chidrens' play and interaction captured on a mobile phone. The images are deconstructed digitally and interpreted into painting. The work is an exploration of a child's 'sense of self' and 'sense of place', cognitive and physical associations, and parallels within their immediate environment, and their positioning in the wider world.

Work is a reaction to places, sites and events that resonate and stir something in me. They could be both insignificant or catastrophic; a singular leaf on a track, a fleeting glimpse from a train captured on a mobile phone, or a world disaster. It is about locating my presence in a complex world, where I often feel displaced. Painting and drawing become the main tools of the mediative process once a connection is made with an object or a place. The imagery constantly changes and the work is resolved when the tension between layers, shapes and paint draws the viewer into the space. I am not interested in reproducing the 'obvious visible' but a resulting visible made through the act of painting and drawing.
